Nutrition FAQ's With Allie

Today I will be answering some common questions I get as a nutritionist! Feel free to email me any questions you'd like to have answered on these FAQ blogs.

What are your thoughts on fasting?

Fasting is so person specific! As a practitioner, I do advise fasting when the time is right. There is some great research behind fasting when it comes to weight management, boosting the immune system, managing blood sugar (helpful for insulin resistance) and cell turnover (good for those with autoimmunity). However, it is important as a nutritionist to recognize this isn't sustainable long term for some clients. With clients that have an unhealthy relationship with food, and struggle with restricting and deprivation, fasting can lead to overeating.

How much do I need to exercise?

Exercise is super person specific! Each body is so unique. I have had clients that do great with high intensity interval training, but then I have clients that do well with restorative exercise like walking, yoga, and Pilates. It is important to remember that exercise is stress on the body! If you are emotionally stressed, it is key to minimize added stress through exercise. The best way to find your ideal routine is to include a variety of styles when it comes to exercise, and find what you enjoy doing both mentally, and physically.

Do you allow yourself to drink alcohol?

Definitely! It is all about balance and moderation. It really depends on what my goals are at the time. For me, alcohol can be inflammatory. When working on inflammation, I will limit my alcohol consumption. However, typically 1-2 alcoholic beverages per week is totally fine! My top choices are wine, or gin.

When is the best time to have my coffee?

The best time to have your coffee is not on an empty stomach, around food but not directly with your meal. For example, having a cup of coffee half hour after breakfast is ideal. Having it with your breakfast can lead to a lack of mineral absorption of your meal. Having coffee earlier in the day is usually a good idea as well to ensure it does not interrupt your sleep. Coffee is acidic, so sometimes having it alone on an empty stomach can cause heartburn and negatively impact some beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Should I cut out carbs if I'm trying to lose weight?

The idea that "carbs are bad" is a myth that needs to be debunked! They are absolutely essential for a balanced diet, and necessary for weight loss. We thrive off carbs for brain health, hormonal balance, energy and so much more! Carbohydrates are also full of fiber and B vitamins which are so important when it comes to weight loss, and overall health. Lastly, they are so delicious and satisfying which leads to less hunger and binge eating, ultimately, helping with weight loss.
